Most leaders think their team exists to serve them. Kenny Wyatt runs a company that serves churches, and he'll tell you the whole chart is upside down. The best leaders flip it. They serve the people, and the power flows back.
Kenny is CEO of Pushpay, a technology company helping thousands of churches and nonprofits know and serve their communities. He grew up in the church but spent 25 years leading software companies around the world, so he sees both sides. That mix is exactly why this conversation lands right now, as more leaders from industry bring their skills into mission-driven work.
3 Lessons Learned
Hire for three things money can't teach. Kenny looks for passion, inquisitiveness, and humility before anything else. Skill in sales or marketing is just baseline. Miss those three, and you'll detract from the culture no matter how talented you are.
Release people, don't just keep them. When his top sales leader got a bigger opportunity elsewhere, Kenny didn't fight it. He celebrated him out the door. Holding onto people who've outgrown you serves no one, and letting them fly carries your culture into the world.
Hunt the daylight. Any gap between sales, product, marketing, and finance is what Kenny calls daylight, and he says it's a cancer. When a salesperson blames the product team for a missed number, that's daylight. Pushpay puts "no daylight" stickers on every computer so people go looking for it.
"Flip the org chart, man." β Kenny Wyatt
One thing to do this week: Find one place in your business where two people or teams are quietly blaming each other. That's daylight. Have the conversation this week to close it.

P.S. Kenny answered "what's your purpose?" in under a second. If you can't yet, that's okay. Start figuring it out this week. It's the game changer he built everything else on.
